Southwinds Local News for Southern Sailors - September 2000 Next Story Fall race to Cuba scheduled
The Key West Sailing Club has announced an ocean race scheduled Nov. 3
from Key West, FL, to Varadero, Cuba. The international event, now in
its third year, has been expanded to include a local race near Varadero,
a race west from Varadero to Marina Hemingway, and a return race from
Cuba to Key West.
The event is open to monohulls and multihulls in spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions with an Friday evening start southwest of Key
West. The visiting sailors are invited to join Cuban Olympic sailors in
a buoy race near the Varadero resort Nov. 6, then race from Varadero to
Marina Hemingway - approximately 70 miles -- along Cuba's north shoreline
Nov. 7. The return race from Marina Hemingway to Key West is scheduled
for Nov. 10.
Race organizer Peter Goldsmith said the participants in the Conch Republic Cup Regatta to Cuba will be fully hosted at Marina Darcena and
Marina Hemingway during the weeklong event. He also said that U.S.
government officials in his area were aware of the plans for the race to Cuba.
"I don't expect any trouble this year," Goldsmith said.
The entry fee for the event is $140 with a $10 discount for US Sailing
